Xiaomi surprised everyone and started distributing the stable version of the latest Android without much announcement. The Chinese company thus becomes the first manufacturer outside of Google to bring Android 16 to its users, including the new version of its overlay, HyperOS 2.3.

Xiaomi 15 and 14T Pro leading the pack

According to the Xiaomi Time portal, the Xiaomi 15 was the first device to receive the Android 16 update with HyperOS 2.3. Importantly, the distribution is not limited to China but is also happening globally under the designation OS2.0.217.0.WOCMIXM. Unlike other manufacturers who often release updates with several months of delay for global markets, Xiaomi has chosen a synchronized approach this time.

The Xiaomi 14T Pro also joined this week and is now starting to receive stable Android 16 worldwide. In Europe, the update carries the designation OS2.0.214.0.WNNEUXM, while international versions are receiving firmware OS2.0.214.0.WNNMIXM. Owners of these devices should receive a notification about the update’s availability in the coming days, as it is being rolled out gradually in several waves.

Beta testing on other models

Although the stable version is currently only heading to two flagship models, Xiaomi is actively testing Android 16 on a wider range of devices. The beta program currently includes the Redmi K70 series, the Poco F7 series, Poco X7 Pro, the foldable Xiaomi Mix Flip, and even the tablet Xiaomi Pad 7 Pro. We can expect a stable release for these devices within a few weeks.

How to check for updates?

While Xiaomi devices automatically check for new updates and notify users of their availability, for such a significant update, it might be useful to check manually. Simply go to Settings > About phone and tap on the HyperOS logo. If an update is available, you can install it directly.

Before starting the installation, make sure you have enough storage space and at least 30% battery. It’s also good to keep in mind that the distribution is gradual and may take several days to reach all devices in a given country or region.

What’s new in HyperOS 2.3 with Android 16?

The update does not bring radical changes to the user interface or groundbreaking new features; it focuses more on under-the-hood optimizations designed to ensure a smoother and more consistent user experience.

HyperOS 2.3 improves animations and transitions between apps and allows for better integration with newer applications. The update also brings the latest security features from Android 16 to protect your device from emerging threats.

Official announcement still missing

Curiously, Xiaomi has not yet issued any official statement regarding the distribution of Android 16. There is no confirmed release schedule or a complete list of supported devices either. Given that the stable version is already reaching users, an official announcement can be expected in the near future.

For owners of Xiaomi phones, this is a pleasant surprise nonetheless – most manufacturers typically release major Android updates several months after Google. Xiaomi is thus clearly confirming its commitment to faster updates, which the company promised earlier this year when it announced extended support of up to 6 years for its flagship models.

Do you own one of the Xiaomi phones that should receive Android 16 among the first?
